The current real estate crisis has many homeowners feeling the pinch. Selling a home, not ever an easy feat to accomplish, can now seem like an impossibility. This does not have to be the case, not if you know how to properly prepare your home, making sure it is completely stage for potential buyers and their agents. It is not uncommon for homeowners to hire professionals to stage their home for them, however staging your home is something you can definitely take care of if you break it down into manageable sections. In fact, at the end, the sell will be that much more rewarding, and who knows – maybe your wallet might be a little heavier.
We’re told to never judge a book by its cover, but let’s face it, sometimes the cover counts, and first impressions are paramount. First Impressions, a concept we’re all familiar with, and it applies to your home. “The outside of your home is the first thing guests see,” says Christopher Breining, owner of HomeStagers, Inc., in San Francisco. And like it or not, the outside speaks volumes about what’s inside — and about its owner. A welcoming entry, helps set the tone for the rest of the house. Don’t neglect the details: potted plants, a clean new welcome mat, these are the first things a buyer’s going to see and they are by far more appealing than a bare entryway.
In addition to this, Breining suggests a quart of glossy paint in a bold, cheerful color for the front door (we suggest red – a classic but perpetually bold choice.), new hardware (or a little elbow grease) to clean and polish the existing knocker, lockset, porch light, house numbers and mailbox). It can help to view your home as an outsider would. What makes you feel welcome? Cascading pots of ivy? A freshly swept walkway? Do it! It’s an investment in your home and as such, your future. When looking at your entryway, don’t forget to look down. Is your welcome mat a joke? Chuck it, and invent in a fresh coir or seagrass mat, and a trio of seasonal potted plants on the landing to dramatically brighten and refresh your home’s entry and make visitors feel welcome.

Unlike most furniture, sofas can be revitalized every couple of years. And if you own an IKEA couch then this process is easy as pie, thanks to Bemz, a Swedish company that specializes in slipcovers custom-made for IKEA products. It’s genius that Bemz designers realized this niche market, because generic slipcovers are a headache to fit onto couches.
Using Bemz.com, you can click on the style of IKEA product that you own, and from there customize your slipcover, choosing from 90 patterns and colors and 8 fabric options. From Hounds’ tooth patterning to stripes to checked patterns to linen, chenille, and various cotton blends: the options are endless. If you can’t tell from the computer which hues will suit your room, you can order up to five color swatches for free. Changing your slipcover for a few-hundred dollars makes a lot more “cents” than buying a new couch.

Hushamok, the baby hammock, has been buzz-worthy lately — for being the crib of choice for the Jolie-Pitt twins and for being a more stable, soothing, and supportive option than a wood-based crib for infants who are restless, colicky, or sufferers of acid reflux. Did we mention it enables babies to sleep soundly on their backs, which is a key recommendation for the prevention of SIDS?
But this is ChicTip.com, remember? We’re writing about this baby hammock because we’re smitten with its design. The Hushamok is handsome because of its simplicity. A 100% organic cotton hammock is suspended from a stand that is available in wood or steel and weighs less than 12 pounds. The bassinet, thus, can be easily transported to different rooms in the house, or to the outdoors, and makes an excellent choice for travel.
The Hushamok Co. gives props to indigenous Latin America for the design concept, as the hammock was the sleeping apparatus of choice in the Yucatan for hundreds of years, before the Spanish conquest truly took hold.
The machine-washable hammock is available in green, natural, blue, natural, orange, or pink, and retails for about $400.

Looking for abstract art to hang in your retro-style sitting room or kitchen that won’t set back your budget? We’ve got a “Chic Tip” for you: Check out the giclée prints on JennSki.com. While original paintings by the New Hampshire-based artist Jenn Ski cost between $200 and $500, these digitally reproduced versions are available for between $27 and $59.
It’s not surprising that Ski’s prints have proved wildly popular for the design savvy in the past year that she’s been on the scene. Her combination of bold shapes along with striking color combinations achieve a striking, yet simple, vibe that synch with any room setup in the house.
