Following our Kitchen Countertop Ideas list that was published last week here are more options:
Wood: Giving a beautiful and warm look, wood is available in a wide range of colors and finishes. While other woods are often seen, the most common are hardwoods such as maple and oak.
Pros: Easy to clean, smooth, can re-sand and re-seal should you have to.
Cons: All that re-sanding and re-smoothing! It stains and scratches easily, plus you’ve got to seal it according to the manufacturer.
Stainless steel – It screams industrial and contemporary! It’s resistant to heat and tres durable. Because they are often design to spec, you can even have a seamless countertop fitted.
Pros: It can take the heat and makes cleaning a breeze.
Cons: It can be pricey, it can be noisy, it can dent, and forget about cutting on it.
Marble – Because of its cost, marble is the luxury darling of countertops, that why you often see it used in one locale (like the kitchen island) as opposed to the whole kitchen itself.
Pros: It’s waterproof and can withstand great temperatures, it’s also beautiful!
Cons: It’s expensive, it’s porous and it requires much maintenance.

Syndecrete composite – Eco friendly! Made of recycled materials like plastic bottles!
Pros: You are viewed as Earth Mama supreme by all your friends!
Cons: While not hideous, there are prettier substances out there.

Like the song says, sometimes it isn’t easy being green, especially when going green doesn’t exactly mean going stylish. That’s what makes Michelle Kaufmann designs such a rare jewel. They are a full service architectural firm that specializes in “Sustainable, innovative, high quality homes.” Their website is living proof of this philosophy. You type in their address expecting another boring display of plain modular homes, but instead you are presented with personalized retreats worth coveting. From design to construction, their goal is to work with each client making the whole concept of going green, easier. I mean, they literally sit down with you, plan your home, one on one, and in under 14 months your new home arrives on a truck, 90% ready to go! Going green never looked so good.

There is something I love about every site I report on here at chictip – be it a color, a writer, a designer taking a risk, I fall in love a little each time I meet something new. It is rare however, that I fall so in love that I find myself having purchased something before I even manage to spread the love vis a vis a particular site’s awesomeness. In fact, it’s never happened. Until today. Bookhou, bookhou, bookhou – they’re absolutely number one in my heart right now. From bags, to home décor, to furnishings, to sculpture – if left to my own devices (and someone else’s wallet) these folks would be responsible for designing my life. As it stands now, I’ve already purchased their linen tea cosy, linen and cotton batting with a delicate spring pattern in white upon it! And I seldom make a pot of tea! Don’t believe me? Don’t want to check out their site? That’s fine. More for me.

This brand new hotel is putting some of Manhattan’s ritziest joints to shame. Opened in July 2008, NU Hotel offers well, a new experience to its patrons! Design fiend? You’re in luck, this concept is smart, clean, and fresh. Just looking for a great place to stay? It’s hard to say which is better – their design or their service. I’m a huge fan of any building that respects the landscape already in place and this hotel fits seamlessly. Plus you have easy access to some of Brooklyn’s most exciting neighborhoods!
