Nothing makes us salivate more than that sacred space where fashion and interior design meet. When done right, the creative energy sparks and the end result is High Fashion Living – and nothing beats that. Lucky us, this trend is continuing and designers we all ache for are jumping on board.
Missoni for example – be it employing their ever-popular flower print on fabric for the home, or taking the next step with a printed fabric for interior that takes its inspiration from the desert itself, their bold patterns and lush creations easily match if not surpass their stylish clothing.
We also just adore Armani Casa. A long-standing giant in the world of high fashion, they now bring their sleek and contemporary look to interiors with stunning furniture that can make anyone seated upon it look like a supermodel.
I’ve long been a fan of Orla Kiely designs, and when I discovered the lampshade available on their website in ‘Flower Blossom Wallpaper’ I fell even further in love.
Crave that fashionista approved look for your home but find the recession to be taking too big a bite? Check out popular clothing darling, H&M. Known for their sleek style and super sales deals, they bring their fashion know how to interior design with bright colors and playful patterns.
Big name or small, fashion is making an impact on how we design interiors and the result be it explosion of colors of sleek structured lines, is undeniably pure magic.

Okay okay okay, so the title’s a bit of cheat – you’re making curtains, not making a dress OUT OF curtains. But if you follow the guidelines we’ve pulled up here, you’ll have curtains so fab, you might just be moved to wear them after all.
The biggest concern when it comes to making curtains for me is the amount of fabric to use. Typically if I’m confident enough to make the curtains themselves, this means I’ve found fabric I love already and thus have jumped the biggest initial hurdle.
So let’s get started. I’m going to go ahead and assume that you’ve already go the necessary hardware installed – rod, etc. Starting curtains without this information is like measuring wood after you’ve cut it – embarrassingly awful results guaranteed. I say this out of love.
1.) Measure the width of your system – this excludes brackets or decorative touches like finials, you don’t want your fabric – however stunning – to cover up either one, it would look weird and be a waste of a finial and no one wants that.
2.) Multiply this width (yes math, but it’s easy I promise) by either 1.5, 2, or 2.5. Pick your number based on the fullness of the design you’re aiming for. Example, a less full look, 1.5, a super full look, 2.5, cool? Cool.
3.) DIVIDE this number by the width of your fabric. Most fabric is 54” inches wide, but good to check and be sure.(This is your – Number of widths)
4.) Now MEASURE the length of your treatment area, adding 12″ – you’ll be glad of the wiggle room.
5.) Add 5″ to the top and 5″ to the bottom to allow for seams.(This is your Cutting length)
6.) And now the big one MULTIPLY number 2 by number 5 on our list( Number of widths X Cutting length), and you’ll have the amount of fabric required to make something fabulous!

Do you remember all those photographs and drawings from the 50s positing what the world around us would be like when we broached the year 2000? Cor seems to take their inspiration from these whimsical wonderings and turned them into grown up realistic furnishings with a futuristic bite. From fold out couches to sofas to easy chairs – they have rethought the way you sit. I’m a big fan of the Cuvert chair. If looked at dead on it appears to be a cube, but that’s a mere trick of the eye and before you know it you’ll find yourself swaddled in this cozy concoction that’s charming and comfortable while maintaining all those futuristic angles.

Look out world, here comes Giles Miller. Like I’ve mentioned in the past, I’ve got a big gooey soft spot for Victoriana. Fuse that dour sensibility with new and interesting textiles and you’ve really piqued my interest – subvert the style altogether and I’m yours for life. That’s where Mr. Miller comes into play. Be it an old world style fainting couch or the subtle curves of a Victorian inspired side table, all the old shapes are present in his collection – BUT THEY ARE MADE OF CARDBOARD! Amazing! So be you the classiest hobo on the block, or a design junkie with brave taste, this is not exactly something to ignore. Take note – this is not cardboard like cardboard pizza boxes, this is a blended product with, if I’m honest, a really appealing color. I mean for pete’s sake, the man has created a corrugated cardboard grandfather clock and it looks like it would be a stunning addition to any home – check it out!
