You might think picking out a new rug for your swanky floor is an easy matter, as far as design goes. How hard can it be? You find a color or pattern you like, a weave that feels good on unshod tootsies and bang-o presto change-o – a new carpet has found its way to your floor! But this isn’t always the case, in fact, when you’re thinking of picking a new floor rug you’ll find yourself asking a lot of the same questions you asked upon installing your floor itself.
Is the space you’re carpeting a high traffic area? If so, while expensive hand woven carpets have their place, this isn’t it. Maybe take a tip from the Japanese aesthetic and use an inexpensive and synthetic pressed weave, great for feet, and great to protect the wood itself. A plus side of carpeting high traffic areas – you’ll be spending less money of the carpet itself because you’ll be changing these rugs out every six months or so – so feel free to explore and make bolder choices than you would typically. Check out some of the great pics we’ve pulled that play with color.
If you are designing a lower-traffic areas like the bedroom or a smaller den, this is the ideal forum to explore textures and more luxurious and sumptuous weaves. Just because less people are walking on it, doesn’t mean it isn’t living up to its full potential, not by any stretch.
Always keep size in mind when picking an area rug. Smaller throw rugs work well as accent pieces, but avoid using too many as they can make a space feel cluttered. If you’re looking for the final unifying touch in a room, a medium sized carpet often does the trick in a way other pieces of furniture can’t quite match.
