Dream Loft : Empire State Loft by KoKo Architecture

Under the shadow of the Empire State Building, the existing Penthouse had been cut up into recording studios in the 1980′s. Windows had been filled in glass block, and the hot tub and sauna filled up the living room. The rooftop extension had been used as an apartment for sublet, and the rooms were dark and musty.

Interior demolition alone was not enough to transform the loft, its use had to be re-thought entirely. Rather than fill the loft with a typical residential program of bedrooms and a/v rooms, the only requirements were “a place to cook for my friends” and “a place  for my books”.

Max In The Box

When I was younger one of the best things my Dad could bring home to me was a cardboard box, or a piece of candy. The problem with the cardboard boxes is that they break! They aren’t sturdy, they certainly don’t look appealing to eye….and, let’s face it- we don’t want out children finding a way to make a home out of boxes too easily, that certainly doesn’t look goof for their future. Max in the Box has found a way to take the standard box idea and turn it into multifunctional piece of furnitute. Max Boxes can be used as stools, chairs, tables….secret hideouts, and beyond! They are delivered flat-packed and are quick and easy to assemble without gluing. Once assembled, the elements are extremely rugged and can withstand many years’ intensive use. All components are made from quality birch plywood with rounded edges for safety and comfort and are finished with non-toxic paint. Toys and furniture in one, the elements contain assembly slots so that they can be slotted together securely in many different ways. And you can always buy additional sets to encourage your children’s creativity. This is certainly a major step up from the cardboard box…..a major step.

Best of the Year 2009 : Fine Dining – Wexler’s, San Francisco

The interior of this nouvelle barbeque restaurant is composed of a restrained palate of zinc and rift-sawn oak warmed by the honey glow of indirect lighting. Reminiscent of an agrarian heritage, the materials are given an uncharacteristic sense of refinement similar to the cuisine itself. Evocative of smoke and charred wood, a dynamic undulating ceiling installation composed of laser cut MDF fins bridges the gap between old and new by linking the modern insertion to the historic facade. This sculptural restaurant was designed by Aaidlin darling design.
