Modern Artist : Counsel Langley

Clearly just one of those lucky few that is born and given a name that anticipates that you are going to be something cool, hip, and creative in life – Counsel Langley is a modern talent. Residing in Port Townsend, Washington, she has utilized acrylic, ink, and immodest amounts of glitter into works of art for which you not only appreciate for the instant feeling they provide you, but also for allowing you and forcing you to think about the concept behind them.

The process that ties together her amazing collections is the two opposing approaches she takes as an artist within each and every painting. First, loose painting techniques such as dripping, pours, splatters, which for her, represent the natural elements of weather, water, clouds, smoke, flora, erosion, growth, galaxies…and second, the approach of a tool user, with pen and ink and architects’ templates, drafting implements and compasses – creating nothing less than precise and controlled lines, concentric circles, grids, and repetitive dots, reflecting the structures and infrastructures built.

Counsel is truly a scientist with a creative palette in her hand, and is fascinated and influenced by the look of outer space, computer chips, dramatic weather, electric circuits, decay, rock-n-roll glamour, plans and diagrams, sci-fi control panels, and architectural drawings – you know, just to name a few! Looking at her collections, whether the “cityscapes” or “girl meets universe” there is something mind stimulating yet calming coming from each. Maybe it is the fact that each concept is conveyed with such fluidity, yet preciseness – or, maybe it is because Counsel has created a vision that is so oddly familiar.
