Many people get tired of their apartment after awhile and want to do something to change it up. But what? Apartments are limiting in terms of space and design options, but all you need is the right inspiration and you can redesign your apartment into the perfect living space for you.
The first step is finding what inspires you. And it’s different for everyone. It can be a place you visited, a book you read or a meal you ate. It can be as simple as being inspired by a friend’s Bellevue apartment or a relative’s beach house. But the key is finding what inspires you and applying that to your apartment. Finding inspiration is not always simple, but here are five places that might inspire you when planning to redesign your apartment.
Visit an art gallery or museum. Whether you respond to modern art, with its daring colors and patterns, or if you prefer the more traditional style of the masters, a common cure for designer’s block is a stroll around an art gallery or museum. Looking at the work of great artists can evoke emotions that will inspire you to create that same feeling in your home.
Photograph interesting textures and colors. Take your trusty digital camera and spend an hour or two taking photographs. You can do this indoors, but taking a walk might give you even more inspiration. And often in the most unexpected places! Looking through a camera, you might discover that the texture of a brick wall you normally walk past or the colors of a tree you never noticed can become the inspiration for your entire redesign plan.
Visit a foreign food store. No time for an exotic vacation? Visit a foreign food store instead! Go to one from a region that intrigues you and wander through the aisles. The colors and graphics of the packaging can be great design inspiration so buy the products with the labels that you find most interesting…and eat them if you’re really adventurous!
Hit the streets. There’s plenty of inspiration on the streets of most cities. And if you live in a big city, this is a great excuse to see all those areas you normally never take the time to visit. Look for interesting signs and graphics along your way and take notice of the buildings and houses. You would be surprised at how much taking design inspiration from a particular architectural style can transform your apartment.
Go back in time. Antique stores have a wealth of old books and textiles that can inspire you to take your apartment in a more traditional direction. Or, in combination with newer pieces, can help inspire an eclectic design scheme.
Inspiration refers to a burst of creativity but nobody knows when that creativity will strike and what will trigger it. When redesigning your apartment, look for simple things that inspire you every day…art, music, colors, flowers. Inspiration doesn’t have to be intellectual or complicated; it just needs to be something that you want to be around every day!
