This week on our weekly column ‘Blog Love’ we interviewed Brittni Mehlhoff – founder of Papernstitch.
1. When did you start blogging and why?
I started papernstitch in 2008. I had recently shut down an online magazine I was running that featured local artists and designers and wanted a fresh start, that didn’t have a local slant.
2. Tell us a little about your blog, your papernstitch exhibition site and where you are from.
The papernstitch blog is inspiration for your modern, DIY life. There’s a little bit of everything, from fashion and home decor to DIY craft projects and biz tips for creatives. The exhibition site came along a few short months after starting my blog and features independent designers, artists and a few independent vintage shops (so basically art + handmade with a sprinkling of vintage). Since they share the same name, the blog and exhibition site were very tied to one another at the beginning, but over the years I have separated them a bit in order to cover some of the other topics that interest me on the blog.
As for where I am from, at this point it feels right to say ‘all over’. I was born in California and lived there for about six years before moving to Florida. I lived in about a half dozen cities in FL before moving to Seattle and now we are back in Florida. Jacksonville to be exact. I imagine we will move again at some point. It’s fun to have the flexibility to move around, meet new people, and explore new cities. I feel very fortunate that we’ve been able to do that.
3. If your house were on fire, what would you grab first?
Definitely our dog, Luna. She gets scared easily, so I don’t know if she would run out on her own. Assuming she got out okay, I would probably grab my laptop and the notebook my husband and I wrote notes to each other in when we first started dating.
4. Describe your dream home.
Ooooh, I could describe my dream house all day long (I think about it all the time), but that would probably be boring. The gist of it would be: concrete or hardwood floors, high ceilings, and floor to ceiling windows in every room. We had an apartment like that in Seattle once and nothing beats it!
5. Holidays are right around the corner, what are you wishing for?
Just health and happiness. And a watch from Cold Picnic.
