Berkshire Pond House – Becket, MA by David Jay Weiner Architects

Designed by David Jay Weiner Architects as a family’s weekend retreat, the Berkshire Pond House in Becket, Massachusetts is a modern dream home with three floors of flowing, light-drenched spaces which tie harmoniously to the surrounding wetlands.

Immediately striking, the single-family structure is an envelope of timber siding, corrugated steel, concrete and plentiful glass. The two-story glazed entrance is reached via a double set of doors which lead to the foyer. Here, the wood paneling is carried in from the exterior which beautifully unifies the space.  A large mesh wire ball pendant commands attention in this voluminous entry.

Each floor masters form-meets-function, beginning with the the ground floor featuring a media/billiard room, play room, wine cellar, sauna and kitchenette. Kayaks, canoes and other water sports items are also stored here, while the sizable concrete terrace allows for additional play for the active family. The first floor is where the main living areas can be found, including the soaring kitchen. A study, elongated porch, dining deck and mud room are situated here, too, with five bedrooms perched on the top level.

With a forestal perimeter, the open-plan’s gathering spaces seem as if they are being embraced by trees and natural light throughout the day.  The zen-like living room is draped in soothing grey and white with hints of yellow and turquoise across the contemporary furnishings and accessories. A massive stone fireplace is freestanding, creating a partition for the room without obstructing any views. The Buddha resting on the mantel contributes to the positive energy of this relaxing living zone.

A dining area rests on the other side of the thick stone wall, with both rooms sitting adjacent to the double-volume kitchen. Stark white cabinets are a sophisticated contrast to the charcoal-hued center island with granite top. Lighting consists of drop pendants and stainless-steel track fixtures. A series of rectangular skylights pours light into this gourmet kitchen, an ideal spot for cooking, entertaining and interacting. The nearby study is cozy, wrapped in medium-toned wood paneling from floor to ceiling. Walls of windows frame the abundant greenery, bringing the outdoors in.

Berkshire Pond House is a modern dream home, an ideal family gathering spot where generations can live, play and connect with nature.

Pretty cool. Would love to have a nice getaway like that. Very much like the kitchen and all the open space.
