The Venice, California based 700 Palms Residence leverages raw and honest materials to create a sort of modern bohemian grittiness that fits in with the surrounding community while still competing with the city’s finest.
Energy efficient and designed on a corner lot, the home’s home’s layout melts the barriers between indoors and out with translucent walls that edge right up to the edge of the home’s property line. Instead of designing with square footage, Steven Ehrlich (who built this home for his wife and three college aged children who visit occasionally) thought in terms of section and volume. In doing so, he makes the 143 by 43 foot lot feel impressive and spacious.
A floating platform that runs across the house between staircases create a stunning feel of innovation between the first and second story of the home, while nooks and crannies in the bottom stairs double as a bookcase.
Sliding glass doors provide ventilation and let in plenty of natural light, but the home is also equipped with shades that transform the overall feel of the home when drawn. Low maintenance, recycled materials make up a lot of the home’s construction, and night radiant concrete flooring regulates the temperature as night falls.
The overall mood of the home is impressive but casual, a modern structure reminiscent of the Beat Generation and everything it had to offer. While the home feels luxurious and open, it’s also warm and strongly themed with a funky color palette. It’s a perfect balance of new innovation with its hat tipped toward the heritage that got Venice to where it is today.
