Art is key in this glass-walled house situated on Downshire Road in Newbury in England. Conceived by the architecture firm Mim Design, the interior is modern and monochromatic with subdued contemporary furnishings that are enlivened by large-scale abstract paintings and art displayed throughout the two-story house.

A dominant material used in the house’s structural framework is metal, which also seems to serve as the inspiration behind the gray and steel-toned color upholstery fabrics in the house. Clean-lined sofas and tables that emphasize straight lines are met with the soft contours of barstools, floor lamps, and Eames chairs.

There is a sense of lightness to the house, from its linear form and pale colors to the heavy use and transparency of glass doors, light-toned wood floors, and bright-white surfaces. But the few vivid canvases infuse the space with an acute edginess that provides balance to the sleek space. Additionally the simple layout of the house facilitates traffic flow through the various living area.

The rear of the house is anchored by a covered terrace and pool, which are visible and can be reached from the open living and dining areas that are sided by floor-to-ceiling glass, offering an abundance of natural light in the main first-floor areas of the house.
