The Estate in Extremadura is a dream home that stands on a 322-square meter area and has a layout that is similar to the Country House. It is located specifically in a privileged environment of Caceres province. The modern home was created from the concept of transforming an abandoned stable into a formal place of residence for family. The modern architecture was completely renovated in a way that it maintains consistency and respectful towards the environment in more ways than one. It promotes green living in its own little way.
Prior to the renovation, there were issues regarding the electricity and water supply but they were solved by the modern architects through sustainability systems, which Abaton always uses on all of their projects. It includes the solar panel system with storage batteries and the turbines. The solar panel was developed to supply energy during summer time while the turbines take advantage of the two courses of water – the streams – running through the estate thus providing energy during winter time. The water has been diverted into a fountain within the open-air interior courtyard of the estate and into the larger storage pond.
The architecture is a single family residence and was given the contemporary intervention so that it becomes a safe and habitable haven that the residents could retire into. The orientation of the layout has been made in such a way that the building exposes an elongated southern façade to the sloping valley and terrain. The implementation of the house floor plans allowed abundant natural light to go into the building throughout the day.
The solid stone supporting walls were opened selectively so that they won’t impede with natural illumination. Overall, the interior design as well as that of the exterior is rustic and modern at the same time. The original haylofts were now the bedrooms of the house.
The living area and the courtyard were bordered with stone and glass sliding doors that could be opened in order to merge the two areas inviting the murmuring sounds of water into the interiors.
The great kitchen was streamlined and the bathroom design has an open concept. Overall, the estate is genuinely inspirational and easy to admire. It is totally modern yet comfortably habitable at the same time. It defines ‘simplicity is beauty’ both inside and out and the maximized use of space is greatly appreciated.
