Dream Home: Fairs Residence by Laidlaw Schultz Architects

There is nothing more I could say about the Fairs Residence except three words – ‘I love it!’ The calming geometry, textural contrasts and marriage of design elements have gotten me near tears. It exudes the subject of beauty and serenity. This modern home is very beautiful and inspirational – a dream home coming true indeed.

The Fairs Residence is a remodeling of a 1959 ranch house in Southern California. It is specifically located in a coastal community in Corona del Mar. The Laidlaw Schultz Architects were tasked to develop a concept that will complement the owner’s passion in building a modern architecture as an answer to their dreams and what a dream home indeed!

At a glance, the collaboration resulted from Fairs’ appreciation for art and Asian philosophy and marrying it with the ideas from the modern architects working on the project. Everything evolved nicely and I think anyone would agree that it went beyond the initial concept. The resulting designs both interiors and exteriors achieved balance in beauty and personality through subtle contradiction in terms of texture and materials.

The owners have the passion to entertain, cook and enjoy life as every day comes and this is probably – in fact the only – reason why the architecture involved a great kitchen which is very inspirational way no matter where you look at it. This modern slash traditional look for a home made me reconsider about what kind of interior design makes me tick.

Included in the complete remodel is the construction of a true Japanese tea room – which was achieved in pure perfection, as the designers, learned more about the Tea Ceremony, what it signifies and its associated architecture. This is probably the initial challenge that the designers have met during the creation and implementation of the concept. Nonetheless, I could say that everything went according to plan.

The house floor plans complemented the design that evolved perfectly from concept to its physical demonstration.

What’s there to love about Fairs Residence? No, let me rephrase the question – what’s not to love about the Fairs Residence? It exudes just serenity and peace with its calming geometry and pacifying interior design. Take for example the bathroom design and tell me if you do not love every inch of it as much as I do.

This modern home is exactly the coexistence or marriage of two opposing elements. It is as if the house is alive and is breathing as we speak.
