The focal point of the interior design in the Union Square Loft renovation is the stair design by Silver+Ong, Inc. It is the key component in the New York City gut renovation which is an attractive element. The stair was conceived and developed as a functional volume instead of creating it as a functional form. The modern home is innovative and the design it involved simultaneously resolves several issues including spatial, material, functional and economical agendas.
Spatially, the stair of this modern architecture defines a certain volume that penetrates the three levels equally which invite residents and guests to go from the cellar to the mezzanine along and around the screen. The house floor plans implemented in this project were definitely complementary and perfect for the architecture. The screen has full 28 feet height with the chocolate colored acid washed steel camouflaging against the brick wall.
By lighting the space behind the screen, the stair transforms into a lantern and the light illuminates the living room and cellar. This is what makes the stair the focal point in the design of the renovation. Depending on the time and the lighting conditions of the day or night, the space can either be camouflaged and flat or expansive and volumetric.
The materials utilized in the construction of the stair reflects the surrounding structures such as the antique gazebo, fire escapes and mottled brickwork found in the city as well as in the adjacent courtyard. The interiors “communicate” rather well with the environment where it was created and constructed including the resin panels, stained oak and the leather of the fixtures found within the interiors. Even though the stair is the center of all visual elements, the way it communicates with the local environment made it blend to the overall scene rather than standing out and overpowering the entire interior design which is truly inspirational in its way.
The project layout completed is an unusual renovation of an originally warehouse designed in 1893 which was turned residential in 1978. The resulting conversion resulted to quirky spaces and impractical room arrangements hence the solution – Union Square Loft which Silver+Ong created and designed.
Structurally, the stair redesign was to bridge the mezzanine, first floor and cellar levels and is the most interesting piece for the project. It is suspended from the ceiling and anchored to the floor to give it a more pronounced yet subtle style at the same time. Above all, the customized stair for the project proved to be a job saver and a practical option for the Union Square Loft.
