Dream Home: Villa Tantangan by Word of Mouth

Villa Tantangan, completed by Word of Mouth or WOM, is a dream home most envied by many. WOM, which is a dynamically young architecture and interior design firm, is based in Bali, Indonesia led by the Principal Architect Valentina Audrito. Most of their projects involved residential and commercial designs that range from private homes to multi-residential spaces, commercial spaces and hospitality projects.

The design trademark of WOM is apparent in Villa Tantangan as the modern home demonstrates both the bold and playful concepts.

The modern architecture is located on Nandi Beach, which is a private and secluded beach along the west coast of Bali. It sits royally on a 6,500 square meters of land overlooking the Indian Ocean to the west, natural water systems to the north and beyond. The house floor plans were impeccably implemented which showed the connection of architecture and the entire space owing it to the local beach temple views and the volcanoes at a distance.

The interior design followed the concept of Landscape Architecture showcasing the significant interaction of the interiors with the natural and built exteriors. The design uses the layout where the buildings are created surrounding the middle courtyard. This has created intimate spaces between the constructed buildings yet opened more spaces on the perimeter. Through different levels of land, each building is unique yet the connection is there. They look similar to giant planter boxes provided landscaped roof either with natural vegetation or ponds.

Because of this design scheme, it blurred the distinction between the natural and built landscape which allowed the structure to become part of it.

The Villa also represented green but modern living through the installation of several green systems such as the natural ventilation attributed to the splitting building forms and the efficient cooling system for the space. The reason of this concept is because the project is remotely located, which made self-sufficiency a necessity. Solar panels and batteries backed up with generator were also put in place.

Villa Tantangan does not only have an inspirational layout but also a very comfortable place to live. The materials utilized were both natural and locally sourced. The carbon footprint of the architecture has been reduced making the definition of architecture and landscape further blurred. It is safe to assume that the Villa promotes comfort and flexibility in lifestyle while encouraging green living.
