Long Valley Ranch – Prefab Home – Mendocino by Marmol Radziner

Some may be surprised to learn that Long Valley Ranch is actually a modular prefab structure. Built as a vacation retreat in Mendocino, California, this modern dream home was created by architects Marmol Radziner and interestingly consists of 10 different modules.

The 2,200 square foot L-shaped dwelling features two bedrooms, two baths and is perched on a 160-acre property of grassy hills and lush trees. As contemporary as this home is, it meshes beautifully with its natural landscape.

The longer wing contains an open living room, kitchen and lounging deck. Vanishing glass walls literally double the size of this living space, opening to the swimming pool, patio and outdoor fireplace. This alfresco terrace features a white fabric awning, which gracefully casts a soft light upon this poolside lounge. Cushy freeform chairs in vivid red contrast the blues of the water and the greenery fantastically.

Concrete flooring is used throughout and, paired with the neutral walls and ceilings, allows boldly-hued furniture pieces to stand out. The kitchen is a narrow area with bar stool seating at the extended island counter which is elegantly finished in smooth dark wood. In place of upper cabinetry, a clean-white tiled wall reaches upwards to the clerestory windows–nice design decision! Exposed pots and pans on stainless shelves bring forth a homey aspect to this minimalist space.

The covered deck transforms into an indoor-outdoor multipurpose room. It’s situated just off the kitchen so it can be used for dining (a dedicated dining room isn’t necessary), relaxing or entertaining. With casual, low-set patio furnishings, this space identifies the “oasis” element of the home.

Along the other end of the structure lies the master suite, perfectly positioned to receive eastern sunrises. Glazed walls fully retract, so this private space becomes one with the outside, seemingly resting underneath the canopy of trees–breathtaking! From the exterior views, the bright red bed linens pop against the natural colors of brown and green.

Sustainability is a key component with solar energies, overhangs, breezeways, even

recycled denim insulation, an on-trend material, implemented.

Long Valley Ranch is a modern dream vacation home, a functional, sophisticated design putting the “pre-” “fab-” in pretty fabulous!
