Suppose Design Office is a Japanese architecture and design firm that has produced some of the most celebrated residential designs in the last decade or so. Today, we thought to feature a home completed in 2006, in Hiroshima, Japan, that cleverly, and boldly, uses vivid colors to establish mood and definition in a modern home with open living areas.

We chose to feature this home as we particularly liked the use of color to provide definition between the different living areas. As well as providing a definite point of transition from one area to another throughout the home, color is used to also provide warmth, mood and contrast in what otherwise could make for a cold and unwelcoming home. Many Japanese homes, such as this one, are very minimalist, so the use of color is an excellent way to give the different living areas the characteristics that suit their function.

Clever use of natural and artificial light helps to accent the areas where bright colors are used. This is particularly evident in the bathroom, where the mix of light helps to provide a very clean, bright and contemporary feel. This is in contrast to the lounge area, which benefits from plentiful natural light, that has used richer and darker colors for the walls, furniture and wood flooring to provide warmth and texture for an inviting and relaxed feeling.

Our personal favorite living area in the home has to be the kitchen area. In fire engine red, its coloring is so stark and alluring when compared to the other living areas, it has an almost magnetic attraction for the eye. The furniture and appliances in the kitchen area are all sleek in design and understated, so as to allow the color to dominate and it make it the standout focal point in the home – which suits the kitchen’s function in a family home.

We think this is an amazing example of using color to provide definition within a home and is an excellent source of ideas for decorating and the use of color in any type of home – whether modern or traditional, the same fundamentals apply. This is an important consideration when designing the interior of a home, if you don’t the strike right balance of color and texture you can end up with a home that appears sterile and uninviting.
