As a frequent visitor to the Poconos, by frequent I mean Spring, Summer, Fall and Winter, I’ve began to notice more and more contemporary and modern architecture springing up as I drive to my winter break destination. The Pocono Mountains, in Pennsylvania, is a popular tourist area and it’s picturesque towns and villages are location for many a city-type’s vacation home, drawing part-time residents from New York, Philadelphia and New Jersey in particular. This popularity is bringing with it a taste for the modern comforts and styles that city living affords, so I thought to take a closer look and feature one PA-based home builder that is combining fine modern living with environmentally friendly construction and furnishings.
In my mind, for something to be good or great it needs to bring together multiple elements of things that interest me. Pocono Modern, based in Jim Thorpe, PA, is a new home developer that constructs stylish and modern Eco-friendly homes in the Poconos. The firm also designs and manufactures a hand-crafted collection of stylish modern furniture that is made entirely from reclaimed and waste materials. Throw in the fact that the firm has a blog in which it enthusiastically discusses architecture, such as Frank Lloyd Wright designs, and you’ve pretty much got my undivided attention.
Let’s start with the homes, from which the Martindale and Eubanks designs particularly caught my eye. The homes incorporate large feature windows that provide for an abundance of natural light coming in, and a view of Mother Nature’s splendor when looking out. Thoughtfully designed, they provide excellent modern loving space to bring the great indoors to the great outdoors. Below are some examples from the Pocono Modern website.
Finally, let’s not forget the furniture. Using reclaimed materials destined for landfill, Pocono Modern has designed a rage of furniture that is refreshingly modern and stylish. Using materials such as concrete for table tops, the range provides all the natural beauty of wood with modern construction forms.
