After first glance, I was about to write how George Street was the new hip boutique hotel or multi-use public space – and more importantly, how soon can we all get there and book the trip! Then, I realized there was already a standing reservation for one, the lucky man being Piero Paolo Gesualdi. A visionary to say the least, he has done more than just dabble in design, as his accomplishments span over architecture, interiors, fashion and textiles, retail and hospitality – so needless to say this dream home has been just another tally mark for the board.
Recently shortlisted for an Australian interior design award, this art deco styled army drill hall built in 1935 in inner Melbourne was renovated to house the designer’s office/showroom and residence. Talk about a dream come true for any designer.
Touring through the house, it is evident that the original time period has been considered and combined with more modern elements. The industrial and sculptural aesthetic projected in both the interior and exterior directly reflects Gesualdi’s philosophy and approach to design-detailed research into materials and collaboration with talented craftsment to produce a seamless integration of new and old. Metal gray may not be everyone’s cozy vision of a home, but it would be pretty sweet to kick your feet up, enjoy the worn-in leather chairs, sip a cocktail, and stay awhile. Maybe Gesualdi should start a waitlist.
