For those of us who are modern design addicts and probably have a life-time subscription to Dwell – we know there are a million and one homes you could tag as favorite. But, it is on those special occasions that you come across a modern home or design you truly appreciate to its core, and can actually picture yourself living and drinking your morning coffee in. Lockyer is one of those personal moments.

After having lived on-site for 6 years, in this heavily treed and hilly suburb of Brisbane, the young family that had outgrown the 65sqm of original, post war space. Despite the need for more room, they were not ready to part ways. In fact, loving their home so much, they lived-in while 95sqm of boldly contrasting extension were added to the side of the existing cottage. The “pod” was able to add a primary living area, kitchen, flexible room, and guest room, and ensured the original integrity of the cottage remained in tact.
Highly economical and sustainable – the residence utilized recycled and FSC timber, energy lighting, high insulation, fans, and NO air conditioning. Instead, the new addition was designed to collect the winter sun and welcome the summer breezes, which were previous complaints of the cottage-only space. Bells and whistles don’t make this house my personal dream home, instead it is the minimal palette of materials, for instance the ceiling under the mezzanine is actually the structural floor.
In the end, the family gained a new member, as this home home will continue to transform and evolve as they grow and change – never leaving their side.

Great modern home design. Great pictures that really capture the essence. We at Morgan & Teach really appreciate the use of fine wood floors. Keep up the great blogging.
