We thought to scour the web and countless arhictectural magazines for examples of homes that take an old, traditional-styled, building in a non-urban environment and transform it into a modern and contemporary home. This conversion of a former stable in Scotland is designed by Edinburgh, Scotland-based architectural firm, Urban Creatures LTD and provided just what we were looking for.

This home shows how you can tastefully renovate an old home with character and have the differing interior and exterior styles compliment one another. The stone barn already benefited from a rectilinear form that enabled it to absorb the modern modifications without affecting the external character of the building.

One of the most important considerations when undertaking a barn or stable conversion is how and where to incorporate the glazed areas, as most barns and stables have solid elevations and very little natural light.

To ensure the once dark building is now a home that is filled with abundant natural light, clever design has to be incorporated – particularly when you are in a country of grey skies, such as Scotland. We see an excellent example of this in the kitchen, where a full-length rooflight / skylight floods the area with natural light.

Additionally, the home design consists of open living areas, which allow natural light through to all areas of the home and create a spacious feel in what is a small home.

We love the bathroom, which makes use of wood paneling a dark tiles for warmth and texture against the white color scheme. The bath’s faucet is a nice touch too, accenting the modern theme without being overstated.

A dormer was added to the bedroom, to create a recessed balcony that adds a touch of luxury, and provides a getaway feeling to the home, as well as providing ample natural light for the bedroom.
This is a really great example of converting a small stable into a modern living space and is very much a Modern Dream Home the owners, and designers, can be proud of.
