This award-winning 6,700 square foot home in Taghkanic, in the Hudson Valley area of upstate New York, was designed by New York-based architectural firm Thomas Phifer and Partners. Completed in 2002, it scooped several awards in the following year, culminating in the AIA National Honor Award in 2004.
Situated on the heighest point of the site, the steel and glass structure was designed to provide panoramic views of the surrounding countryside, which offers glorious views across the Hudson Valley towards the distant mountains. The upper level pavilion is almost exclusively glass, with the lower level of the house containing the more private living areas that are organized around a sky-lit corridor and built into the landscape of the property.
The interior design is minimalist, with exquisite appointments through0ut. The main living area offers a splash of color through contemporary modern furnishings that include comfortable lounge furniture and stylish contoured coffee tables.
The Kitchen and adjoining dining area continue the minimalist theme, with the dark cabinetry and stainless steel appliances receiving some warmth and texture from the hard wooden floors.
The bedroom areas have a Japenese and zen-like quality, with low-level beds and area rugs in warm, neutral colors.
The house is completed by a roof garden around the upper level pavilion, which blends the house into the natural surroundings beautifully. Indeed, seen from a particular angle it’s difficult to tell that there is a spacious home embedded into the landscape at all.
Innovative and detailed-oriented to the finest degree, the Taghkanic House is a masterpiece of architectural and interior design. Worthy of its many awards, this truly is a remarkable Modern Dream Home.

Just came across this site. My firm was contracted to do the electrical, lighting and smarthouse wiring. It was a fun project, lasting well over a year. Nice photographs.
