Sausalito Home by Swatt Miers Architects

Perched on a hilltop in Sausalito, California, this modern dream home was designed by Bay Area Swatt Miers Architects on a site originally belonging to a 1950s dwelling. Completely rebuilt, the 2,700 square foot, two-story home possesses incredible views of its panoramic landscape.

Horizontal timber siding and plentiful glazing envelops the elongated facade, while a lower level garage is kept discreet. The entrance to the home is just as low-key, yet still elegant, with a slatted platform deck leading to the wood-framed glass door and foyer. Love how this understated entry seems naturally burrowed into the hillside!

Once inside, it may be the juxtaposition of materials which is most eye-catching. Traditional post-and-beam architecture was implemented, including a linear wood ceiling which contributes warmth to the spacious, shared living areas. Contrast is key, with a cool stainless steel and concrete fireplace set underneath the vast exposed wood ceiling. The adjoining kitchen is just as resplendent with honey-hued wood posts harnessing a concrete island and gleaming stainless countertop. Rustic-meets-modern at its finest!

Minimalist furniture adorns these contemporary spaces which are comfortable and soothing in a creamy, restrained palette. The open floorplan gives way to scale, featuring a focal point staircase of cantilevered wood and steel. Its soars to the second level and is adjacent to a full-volume framed glass wall. From the main floor, a door opens directly to the outdoor terrace boasting a raw concrete retaining wall which offsets the varied greenery of the hill beyond it.

Once upstairs, the master suite with separate sitting area greets with spectacular views of the mountains and nearby San-Francisco bay. A private terrace wrapped with a lateral steel railing sits just off of this lounging corner. The ceiling detail here is unique with the smooth wood highlighted by a white tray over the bed. A white partition wall divides the room, which contains the bathroom on the opposite side.

The Sausalito Home is an innovative dream home maximizing its dramatic landscape, while meshing traditional materials with livable, modern design.
