A modern glass dream home aptly named Sense, literally captures one’s physical perceptions. Designed by architectural firm Kazutoshi Imanaga, this Tokyo home engages sight, touch, scent and hearing and is as equally beautiful as it is functional for the young family living there.
From the street, the white block entry gives little insight to the breathtaking glazed home hidden just a few steps beyond. What I find most intriguing is the predominant presence of water. Both rhythmic in sound and soothing as a visual, the entrance to the home features a shallow blue-tiled basin with geometric stepping stones and wall fountain. This water feature is adjacent to the outdoor gardens and can be seen and heard from all living areas. Two swings hang whimsically at this basin, perfect for fresh-air play for the children. A linear swimming pool resides on the other side of the garden, ensconced by glass walls which open entirely to the outside. A glass floor further enhances the water aspects, drawing it into the living space.
The main living space floats amongst the green courtyards and water areas, featuring fully retractable doors and welcoming a seamless fusion of the outdoors with the interior dwellings. The open, light-filled layout connects the two-story living room with the kitchen and other dedicated spaces which are furnished in a array of warm wood tones, including a large wooden-slatted entertainment/work space/storage center. This unit, as well as a change in ceiling height, acts as a gentle divider to the otherwise uniform space. Furnishings and textiles are neutral in colors of cream, grey and white, allowing the outside color elements of blue and green to take center stage.
The cantilevered glass and black steel staircase extending from the ground floor to the second level is a masterpiece. Seemingly suspended, it leads to a glass catwalk which runs the length of the home, ultimately reaching the bedrooms. Bathrooms are sleek, pure and modern, with one on the main level featuring a glass wall which dramatically blurs the distinction between the swimming pool and the inside environment.
Sense is a modern family dream home designed for a lifestyle of becoming one with nature’s most stunning elements. (via)
