Chool Stool /Chair by James Lucas

When I saw the Chool chair outside of the Workstation on John’s Lane Street during the Clerkenwell Design Week in London I was so impressed its cool design and dual functionality. It’s so ingenious I can’t believe that no one had thought about it before! When not being used, it looks like a stool, but when someone sits the entire pod smoothly descends a few inches to standard seating height with a full size backrest. The chair doesn’t operate on any external power and is operated solely by the mass of the user, so there is no frustrating charging time. Isn’t it incredible?

I had the pleasure of meeting the designer, James Lucas, and having a little chat with him. James said that the idea behind that came up to him while he was watching what a workspace looks like when people are leaving their desks and he noticed that too many unnecessary chairs were left scattered around. With this special mechanism you can push the chair under the desk when you’re done so it is no longer in anyone’s way, creating a clear living space. The chairs can also be locked in either position.
