Born in Japan in 1941, Toyo Ito started his own studio Urban Robot in 1971. Ito loves to experiment the different use of materials and to look for new tactile and visual opportunities. He is a master in dematerializing and lightening. Since 2002 he has been collaborating with modern furniture maker Horm and here are the stunning pieces he designed for them:
The image above, and at the top of the article, shows Toyo Ito’s Sendai shelving system, of which only 25 were made – and all signed by Ito.
Available as tables, benches and stools, the amazing Ripples collection makes use of several layers of exotic woods that get darker in color at each layer. This enables the furniture to be sculpted and produce the rich definitions and ripple effect.
The Moony cabinet is available in either Whitened Beech or Mocha Beech (as shown above). We love the chic frosted circle decorations on the doors, which give a sophisticated look to this piece of furniture. Ito also produces other lines for Horm, such as the fun and trendy Polka Dots range, we’d encourage you to check Horm out and also take a look at some of Ito’s interesting architectural work via his website.
