I saw these lamps at the Design Junction during the London Design Festival and I loved the inspired use of Lycra fabric and other materials that it’s made from.
Benjamin Hubert is known for industrial design that is “Materials Driven” and “Process Led.” Tenda, as this lamp series is aptly named, is the Italian word for tent, which both describes the look of these lamps and directly introduces the construction technique with which they are made.
The Tenda lamps are a very interesting combination of materials developed for other industries. The fibre glass rods which provide the overall structure of the lamp were initially developed for kite manufacturing. Lycra, which helps to diffuse the light source, is well known to be from the sports apparel industry. And finally, 4-way stretch (micro) mesh, from the undergarment industry, comprises the final top layer which seems most visible.
Benjamin Hubert has taken these materials, care and a year of prototyping and testing to create this final beguiling product featured before you.
