The beauty of postmodern design is that it marries the coolest aspects of retro style with the benefits of high-tech contemporary living. Case in point: California designer Joe Wilkerson’s stunning “M21 Console.”
A throwback to the ‘60s, when televisions started to expand and were housed in wood cabinets that stood on four legs, the “M21 Console” boasts the kind of retro-future imagination that made The Jetsons and I Dream of Genie hit TV sets so dreamy. Part of the contemporary spin is that the updated piece is considerably wider, as it’s designed to accommodate a large flat-screen TV. In addition to the jet-age shape, four rows of faux brick-style paneling below the TV compartment complete the retro look. The paneling covers a storage area where DVD players, video game units, and other unsightly technologies can be hidden.
Another contemporary twist is that the console comes in sustainably harvested black walnut or cherry wood, and is finished in a non-toxic, eco-friendly veneer.
The dimensions are 44” (w) x 58” (h) x 10” (d), though the piece can be customized to fit other sizes of televisions.
