Dialect Design, a design + build firm in Charlotte, NC, created an ideal space for learning and living when they built the second story addition for the Schönberg residence. The focal point of the addition is a contemporary library. Built with an ingenious “box within box” construction of recessed shelves that reveal shadow lines creating the illusion of floating inside the library walls, the library is a study in drama and functionality. The red exterior walls echo the ordered elegance of the shelves to dramatic effect.
Dialect is known for their expert and unconventional approach to construction and materials. With the Schönberg addition, a cunning use of disparate materials such as steel, concrete, glass, aluminum, acrylic, fabric, and wood are “woven together” and simultaneously provide a sense of separation and harmony.
Three thoughtfully appointed bedrooms surround the library. Designed for the Schonberg’s three daughters, age 4-11, these rooms act as satellites to the focal room. The new bathroom is shared by all three girls and balances sophisticated design with whimsical touches. The translucent acrylic counter, deeply red stained cabinetry, ubiquitously running glass and ceramic tile all work together to create an inviting space for young ladies with room to grow.
Dialect’s inclusiveness with the Schönbergs fostered an environment where the renovation invigorated daily life without disrupting it. In service of achieving something unique and fresh, everyone involved rose to the challenge of rethinking the conventions of their expertise.
