A boutique hotel, citizenM in Rotterdam, The Netherlands is the chain’s newest and fifth property to open its doors. Situated in the city centre, this destination exudes a hip, modern hotel design which is not at all austere as some trendy hotels tend to be. Designed by Concrete Architectural Associates, citizenM features 151 rooms with fantastic views of the Oude Haven, or old harbour. The progressive hospitality company prides itself on affordable luxury with excellent service.
The hotel’s facade is an eclectic mix of materials, color and shapes. A colorful windowed mural was commissioned by artist Gijs Frieling, creating interest across the glass and steel exterior which also receives a spectrum of window hues. Interior spaces are cleverly reflective of The Netherlands flag of red, white and blue.
Once inside this distinctive hotel, the main lobby and bar lounge is inviting and spacious. A two-story volume entrance is airy, with floating white lighting pendants dropping from the ceiling. So incredible is the sculptural wood staircase which gracefully twists to the second story. A floor-to-ceiling wall displays books and bric-a-brac all themed around the city’s maritime heritage. A live tree grows within the space and is embraced by a circular bench. Self check-in stations are managed by hotel “ambassadors” providing an seamless welcome process.
The living room area is arranged with various mid-century modern tables, chairs, sofas, and animal hide accent rugs. A similar wall unit to the one in the lobby exhibits more of the hotel’s collection of nautical decor which ties in nicely to the hotel’s location. The communal tables are a phenomenal strategy to get guests interacting, while more private zones allow for more intimate conversations, even meetings. An adjacent bar and cafe zone is ideal, as staff is well-trained to provide anything from made-to-order coffees to cocktails.
Accommodations are cool and comfortable, each featuring an LED illuminated shower. In fact, touchscreen tablets in each room control everything from movies on demand, window shades, temperature control, customized alarm-clock chimes and even mood lighting!
With modern boutique hotels like citizenM popping up and offering a vibrant urban setting, cool design and plentiful amenities, there’s no longer a reason to pay more for chic accommodations.
