Wunderbar Cage in Luckenwade, near Brandenburg, Germany is a former bank building that was converted into a café with bar and lounge area by pjmvdm (Peter Jan-Marc van der Meer). Completed in late 2008, this project has attracted a lot of international attention – so we thought to share it with you.
The pjmvdm design team worked on a concept for this gastro-space that allows the WunderBar to have a café-styled atmosphere during the day and a more sophisticated cocktail bar atmosphere at night. This transformation is achieved through clever use of color and indirect lighting. The mirror-like floor, for example, is the result of a resin-coated finish on a colored screen that magically comes to life for the evening clientele.

Most of the minimalistic furniture was specially designed for WunderBar and is in contrast to the former Bank’s massive cash safe which was left in place as a feature piece and show of the building’s former life. We think this is one of the more interesting projects in the hospitality space in recent years and hope you enjoy it.
