Enter the Radisson Blu Riverside, a Gothenburg business hotel that has ventured into more of a boutique atmosphere, embracing eclectic design and an overall more personalized vibe than your typical corporate travel destination. Stockholm-based Doos Architects created these “intimate” spaces for a modern hotel catering to the business set. The specific area of Lindholmen where the hotel is situated was a former shipyard, and has recently transformed into a science-technology-innovation epi-center.
The Radisson Blu Riverside is constructed of solid materials such as wood, iron and copper, while interior elements consist of glass and steel within a rich color scheme creating a strong, yet warm aesthetic. The juxtaposition of materials is thought-provoking. For instance, upon checking in, an imposing structure of copper presides, while nearby in the restaurant and bar, Cuckoo’s Nest, buttery leather banquettes are welcoming, clad in a multi-stained mix of woods, some with silky pillows, while colorful lighting pendants above casting a cozy glow.
With 265 rooms, 10 suites, a conference center, restaurant and fitness center, this urban hotel exudes the intimacy and personality of such a property. Spaces are social and intriguing where stimulating conversations are encountered and business deals are made. A sleek breakfast and lunch bar is enticing with linear cabinetry and a back-lit wall showcasing the fare. Furnishings in both the communal spaces, as well as the rooms blend with mid-century modern and contemporary styles.
Ground floor water views are stunning, even unexpected perhaps, yet the top floor perspective cannot be beat. From the BodyLab, the hotel’s fitness center, unparalleled views of the harbour are found. It’s here where guests can experience the gym, sauna and hot tub, then relax in black wicker-type chairs, or mod yellow-orange seating overlooking the water while enjoying a refreshment.
We must address the rooms which are a cheerful mix of textures and hues in plaids, solids and stripes, so not expected in a business hotel! Fabrics are plush in velvets, leather and chenille, as well as bedding which boasts luxurious thread-count linens. Flooring is dark wood, which creates a striking foundation to the space. Unique glazing such as in-room partitions and balconies, allow for abundant natural light and a cheery environment from which to work. The palette is a base of monochromatic grey, white and black, yet fabulous expressions in blue, violet, red, turquoise and moss green occur as a schematic throughout the rooms. Rather unbusinesslike, which we love!
The Radisson Blu Riverside is a revealing, progressive presentation of today’s modern business hotel. We’d like to see more of this around the globe.
