The fantastic Modernism Week, held annually in Palm Springs, is drawing to a close and that means the Vintage Airstream & Trailer Show. Airstreams are iconic, beloved by everyone from surfers to retirees and geeks (Airstreams are often featured in Sci-fi movies and TV shows, such as The X-Files). To coincide with the show this weekend, the ChicTip staff thought to bring you some Trailer Chic with examples of creative interior designs that we’ve seen for the Airstream.
The first Airstream we wanted to feature is designed by DWR (Design Within Reach) and features contemporary modern styling and furniture throughout. In particular we love the fact that the Design Within Reach team bravely took on the challenge of a smaller model Airstream, to convey the fact that great design can make the most of any space, small or large. The contemporary wall clock is an excellent example of how accessories can accent and complete a design.
The second Airstream features design by Architect Christopher Deam’s San Francisco-based design firm, CCD, and is where the stylish kitchen shown at the top of this article is from. Commissioned by Thor Industries, the makers of the Airstream, Deam and his team designed interiors for a line of Airstreams that were named the Airstream International CCD. Introduced in 2000, the line has proved an overwhelming success and now makes up some 40% of Airstream’s annual sales. Thor Industries and Christopher Deam later teamed up again in 2007 to launch a line of contemporary modern trailer homes for Breckenridge, a division of Thor.
Finally, in the flavor of Modernism Week, we thought to bring you something very Mid-century. Although appearing to be Retro inside and out, this is actually the 19-ft Airstream Bambi II, 75th Anniversary Edition, that was launched in 2005. The interior boasts modern appliances and conveniences, such as space-saving LCD flat screen TVs, but retains its authenticity through the use of veneers and upholstery that are very much Mid-century.

At the bottom of this page is the most out-of-control airstream interior I ever saw, done by the principals of Mackenzie-Childs. Not saying it’s my taste, but a very interesting contrast to the modern ones you’re featuring here. perhaps you could post for all to see. http://www.mrsharkey.com/busbarn/trailers/trailers.htm

It’s definitely unique and very creative, and worth checking out, so thanks for sharing. However, as it’s not contemporary or design-based, it’s not something we’d typically showcase.

My fiancee and I are selling our dream home, and all of its
contents for airstream living. It should be exciting! I can’t
wait to renovate an old classic to make it look like a chic
silver bullet!
