Talk of “change” has been in the air this November, and not just because of Barack Obama. On November 15 the world’s first conference for young people, “Changing the World,” took place at Queen’s University in Toronto. Sponsored by forward-thinking companies like IBM, Starbucks, and Facebook, the event offered free admission for students and featured an impressive roster of speakers delivering 18-minute lectures on the topics of technology, science, design, entrepreneurship, philanthropy, and the arts, in particular how new advancements and philosophies in each field can help to “change the world” for the future.
The presence and importance of “design” at this revolutionary conference impressed us, both in terms of technology and aesthetics. Lectures on the importance of design to the future were given by Mike Beltzner, head of User Interface Design at Mozill; Karim Rashid, the groundbreaking industrial designer who has created over 2,500 products; and Hani Rashid, the principal architect at New York’s Asymptote.
