Summertime brings forth memories of ice-cream, the boardwalk and lazy beach days. Those sentiments are exactly what Manhattan-based Greek architect, Nicholas Karytinos of Tacet Creations, incorporated in his modern retail design for Fresco Gelateria, a gelato shop with its first U.S. location in New York’s vibrant East Village neighborhood.
Influenced by the two sibling owners’ gelateria operating experience in Athens, Greece, this new concept store is reminiscent of spending a breezy day at the beach. White-washed rustic wood plank walls and low, layered ceilings with white-painted beams meld with the raw concrete floors finished with a sandy-hue, contribute to the chic, beach shack vibe. An interesting, albeit nostalgic tid-bit, the amazing built-in bench seating was constructed of reclaimed wood from the iconic Coney Island boardwalk.
From the street level, a simple awning rests upon the entirely glazed storefront, enticing passersby with a peek into this contemporary, Italian ice-cream shop. Once inside, a wall to the immediate right is uniquely branded with the store’s logo in natural wood. Just down a few steps, the refreshing gelato experience begins.
Interiors are minimalist with a decidedly urban appeal fused with a carefree, seaside setting. Casual seating is plentiful at the wooden benches throughout the shop, as well as the set outside on the sidewalk. Bright lighting fixtures camouflaged behind wood panels glints through openings in between the boards, mimicking cheery summer sunlight pouring in–so clever!
The service counter itself is a softly rounded, white suspended structure with clean lines and a curved glass display case for the cool, creamy treats. Keeping with the innovative design element, gelato offerings are just as modern with offbeat flavors such as goat cheese, rosewater and salted caramel complementing the classics of vanilla bean and peanut butter. Polished silver gourmet coffee and espresso machines glimmer atop the counter, treating customers to an array of coffee drinks. Home-baked pastries are also offered daily.
Fresco Gelateria’s modern retail design is so fresh and inviting, exuding a relaxed beachy energy for city dwellers to indulge in no matter the season.
