The cross-shaped window of the Pharmacy M is the most striking feature and the focal point of the store design which turns into a green sign during office hours. This Belgian pharmacy has been transformed and completed by the Belgian studio Caan Architecten and is constructed on a former farm within the outskirts of Ghent.
This is a unique, stand-alone retail design worthy to check out.
At a glance, it looks like an ordinary emergency kit as it looks like a box. The ground floor of the architecture is occupied completely by the sales floor while a laboratory can be seen on the basement. A small apartment or living space is located on the first floor. This can be accessed through the shop but it opens out into a stunning roof terrace. The kitchen, dining and sleeping areas have been incorporated in this space.
Indeed, this commercial design is unique in such a way that it is not purely just a place where you buy something.
The primary material used in the construction is grey brickwork but in addition it also features the glass walls on all three elevations.
Pharmacy M is formerly located at an old farm within an existing parcel which is situated adjacent to the main road populated by different array of types of architecture. For some reasons like outdated facilities and limited potential of the farm, the farm was demolished and the construction was restarted. This is where Caan Architecten performed the radical transformation of the pharmacy.
On the front side, a new volume has been placed but on the same borderline. The old farm and the new construction have been integrated into the existing content.
The functionality and program of the Pharmacy M defined the store space design of the structure. This shop design allowed all necessary facilities to be located in one space – the ground floor. The ground floor of this beautiful store has the extensive sales area, night safe and the preparation area.
This is truly a design for retail not to mention that the surrounded glass wall invites natural light and transparency that allowed further relationship of the exteriors and interiors. The terrace and green roof that opens from the small apartment area is also a visible mark which can be seen from the street side.
The modern shape of the building has been a well implementation of the concept and has been integrated to its surrounding context. The amazing store design is minimalistic and transparent which made it into an identifiable landmark to any onlooker.
